The unenlightened continue to make outlandish and/or untrue claims about Ben Sheets. Meanwhile, whenever he pitches he consistently goes deep into games, racks up the strikeouts and refuses to walk hitters. He is far and away the best pitcher on the Brewers; nobody else is that close. Yovani Gallardo and Manny Parra are sure promising, but neither can bring what Sheets does on a consistent basis.
Already this season his curveball has been better in two games than it was at any point in 2007. Through his first 15 1/3 innings, he has 15 Ks, 2 walks, zero runs allowed and a .59 WHIP. If he makes 30 starts, I’d be very surprised if the Brewers did not make the playoffs. Why people continue to shrug off the idea of keeping him past this year is beyond me.
Anyway, nice little start to the season here for the Crew. Too bad they can’t play the Giants more often, but you still have to be pleased that they dominated the series. Reds and Mets should make for a tougher week, and Sunday’s matchup of Sheets-Santana could be a classic.
Side note: Has anyone else noticed how much the legend of Jason Kendall’s lasik eye surgery has grown? Pretty soon it will pass Kevin Mench’s shoe size increase in mentions. I don’t think they’ve missed mentioning it in one game yet.
Oh, and from now on, every time Gabe Kapler has a good game, we get a Beefcake Kapler pic. Enjoy.
